My favorite Bistro in Tokyo, Japan, is also a beloved Tokyo gourmet spot, offering a creative fusion of French and Italian cuisine in Nihonbashi. Named Fujiya Honten, it is renowned for its reasonable prices, exceptional flavors, and a unique dining experience, always bustling with patrons. A ten-minute walk from any station, and about fifteen minutes from where I stay, I find myself irresistibly drawn there for dinner every night.

Fujiya Honten spans three floors, each offering a distinct dining setting: an open-kitchen bar on the ground floor, traditional indoor seating on the second, and a spacious terrace on the third, both of which can be reserved, making it ideal for gatherings with friends and family.

The food is incredibly delicious. As a fine dining enthusiast, I also enjoy the high value of izakaya dining. This place strikes a balance, offering expertly crafted and richly flavored Western creative dishes at attractive prices. The menu thoughtfully categorizes appetizers, cold dishes, main courses, salads, desserts, and beverages, allowing for the creation of a premium set meal one would find in a fine dining restaurant.

The variety and taste of the dishes are unforgettable, with popular items like chicken liver mousse in a cornet, eggplant filled with crabmeat, perfectly roasted lamb, crispy yet tender fried tuna paired with natural wines, savory cheese macarons, seasonal seared shirako with citrus vinegar, and more, all leaving me thoroughly satisfied.

My fondness for Fujiya stems from their accommodating and comfortable approach to solo diners. With a standing bar and a well-portioned menu, it welcomes those dining alone to enjoy a diverse selection of dishes. The service is friendly and moderate, perfect for guests who prefer minimal social interaction. Being able to watch the chefs cook adds an element of enjoyment to the solo dining experience, compelling me, a solo traveler, to return night after night, even when planning to explore other culinary delights. It’s highly suitable for solo travelers in Tokyo, offering flexibility to fit one’s schedule, with little to no wait time for individuals or pairs.

The selection of wines, including many types of natural wines, is carefully curated, with a few offered daily to guests, increasing the chances of discovering a pleasant wine. I’ve grown to love natural wines here, finding favorites through their daily selections.

Enjoying a glass of wine, paired with Fujiya’s select delicacies like the wine-soaked sweet shrimp, perfect for balancing the shrimp’s freshness with the alcoholic sweetness, making an exquisite match with natural wines. Additionally, trying their lemon oyster with specially prepared lemon foam innovatively adds flavor, creating a perfect blend of sweetness and tartness, a paradise for dining alone.

Most impressive is the value offered by Fujiya. For less than 700 NTD, one can indulge in a luxurious puff pastry filled with foie gras (or duck liver?) and venison, a rare find in a metropolis like Tokyo, offering an unparalleled experience not found in Taipei.
